The only not so great part of football season is the eating habits it brings with it. Studies show people actually eat more calories on Super Bowl Sunday than on Thanksgiving. What. The. Heck. But you can change that. Altering your habits with simple steps and bringing along some healthy options to the tailgate makes healthy living during football season much easier. Healthfully Ever After
Some people, even nutrition people, like food and health to be very black or white. They like to use labels like bad or good or unhealthy or healthy. But that's tough. I'm not in that labeling camp. I love some of the supposed 'bad unhealthy' foods. But I'm picky. I pick foods for enjoyment based on taste and quality. I don't settle for less. I also have an open mind and I love to try healthy desserts from raw fruit tarts to Greek Yogurt ice cream cakes. Why not be adventurous? Eat dessert and You just might find a new favorite.
A Cider Spritzer: Skip the calorie heavy mixers and lighten up straight bourbon/whiskey with spice heavy apple cider and seltzer. Move volume, more hydration. less calories.
Buffalo Tofu Dip: Having never actually made 'regular' buffalo chicken dip before I was kind of Converse Mens horrified to see what goes in this tailgate staple. Let's just say there were several kinds of high fat dairy involved. Case in point? Yesterday I thawed the last of the fig puree from last year's fig harvest and made whole wheat fig newtons. And throughout the summer, having this crumble topping meant I could whip up a fruit dessert in a flash. All I had to do was slice the fruit of the day to go under the topping. That's really what living a healthy balanced life is all about to me. It's home made and delicious. Efficient and easy. All it takes is a little time investment at the start to enjoy for many more dining sessions.
4 T butter1 C oats1/4 C whole wheat flour1/2 C brown sugar, packed2 T flax seed, ground1 t vanillaplums (about 4 medium)1/2 teaspoon rosewater/// Directions /// In a medium bowl, mix butter, oats, brown sugar, whole wheat flour and flax with a pastry cutter or with your hands, rubbing between your fingers. At this point you can freeze the topping in a ziplock for later, or prepare the crumble now. Add plums to a baking dish in slices and toss with 1/2 teaspoon rose water. adventure: I hope you all are gearing up to enjoy Labor Day weekend! The husband and I are off to unplug a little bit before my schedule gets cray cray. Also, crucial note, to get the last few seasonally appropriate wears out of my Jack Rogers and white pants before I unpack the boots and tweed. Also on my weekend list? I'm SO EXCITED (as evidence by capitalization) that it's football season once again! While I no longer follow college football, the NFL has always been a big part of my fall and winter life. A born and bred Packers fan, who receives Christmas gifts from Packer Santa every year, I married a Redskins Loyalist. Bless his heart. Our first date was a Redskins vs. Packers game. We love football.
Rosewater Plum Crumble/// Ingredients ///
To kick off September, only days away, I knew I had to make something with summer plums. The plums in Virginia right now are amazing as we've experienced a mild season of temps in the 80's (vs the usual upper 90's and humid)! While the husband and I were very sad not to enjoy the plum harvest from the Grandparents' old vineyard this year (they just moved into a retirement community), we couldn't help but to console ourselves by stopping at the farmers market to stock up. That's right. Emotional produce shopping.
