all over the state this year," said Department of Transportation Commissioner Chris Clement.
Hassan signs bill to raise gas tax
"Even with this increase, New Hampshire still has the lowest fuel charge of any state in New England, and every single dollar raised goes to the construction and maintenance of state and municipal roads and bridges," said bill sponsor Rep. David Campbell, D Nashua.
But conservative groups said Granite State drivers can't afford the increase.
SAY WILL GO TO A VERY SPECIFIC NEED. JOSH MCELVEEN IS HERE NOW TO EXPLAIN. BACK IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF 2004 THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A GALLON OF GAS WAS 1.88. TIMES HAVE CERTAINLY CHANGED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. WHILE A FOUR CENT BUMP A GALLON MIGHT NOT SEEM LIKE A LOT, WHEN IT COMES TO NEW HAMPSHIRE'S INFRASTRUCTURE, SOME BELIEVE IT'S A CRITICAL INVESTMENT. WITH THE WINDY BACK GROP OF THE I 93 EXPANSION PROJECT, GOVERNOR MAGGIE HASSAN SIGNS INTO LAW THE FIRST HIKE IN THE NEW HAMPSHIRE GAS TAX IN 23 YEARS. IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SUCCESS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE'S PEOPLE AND OUR BUSINESSES. EVEN WITH THIS INCREASE, NEW HAMPSHIRE STILL Converse Shoes For Boys HAS THE LOWEST FUEL CHARGE OF ANY STATE IN NEW ENGLAND, AND NUMBER TWO, EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR RAISED GOES TO THE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF STATE AND MUNICIPAL ROADS AND BRIDGES. THE HIKE WILL TAKE EFFECT ON JULY 1 AND WILL RAISE AN ESTIMATED $30 MILLION ANNUALLY. IT INCREASES FUNDING FOR HUNDREDS OF BRIDGES AND CRUMBLING ROADWAYS AND PAY FOR THE BONDING TO COMPLETE THE 93 EXPANSION. BUT WHEN YOU RAISE THE GAS TAX THERE'S ALSO PUSHBACK AND IN THIS CASE IT COMES FROM CONSERVATIVE GROUPS WHO SAY THAT GRANITE STATE MOTORISTS CAN'T AFFORD IT. IT'S UNCONSCIONABLE AND UNNECESSARY, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED DIFFERENTLY AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED DIFFERENTLY. IT'S NOT A REVENUE PROBLEM, IT'S A SPENDING PROBLEM, AND UNTIL WE SOLVE THAT PROBLEM WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO FIX THIS HIGHWAY OR THE NEXT HIGHWAY PROJECT. AT ANY RATE THE DEBATE IS OVER AND THE GAS TAXIS GOING UP. BUT TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS Converse Shoes Retro
The increase will take effect on July 1 and will raise an estimated $30 million annually. The new law increases funding for the state's hundreds of red listed bridges and crumbling roadways and will pay for the bonding to complete the I 93 expansion.
Merrimack drivers will get a break in the new law because the exit 12 toll will be going away in a couple of months.
"It's unconscionable, and it's totally unnecessary," said Greg Moore of Americans for Prosperity. "This could have been handled differently and should have been handled differently, and it's disappointing."
Transportation officials said motorists will see their money at work.
"It's not a revenue problem, it's a spending problem, and until we fix that problem, we won't be able to fix this highway or the next highway project," said Matt Murphy of Citizens for a Strong NH.
POINT OUT THAT MOTORISTS WILL AT LEAST SEE THEIR MONEY AT WORK. WE'RE GOING TO BE PAVING ALL OVER THE STATE THIS YEAR. SO TO BE PRECISE, THAT'S WHY IT'S GOING. AND IT IS WORTH POINTING OUT THAT EVE 2010 THE HIKE IN THE GAS TAX, NEW HAMPSHIRE STILL HAS THE LOWEST IN THE REGION. MERRIMACK DRIVERS GET A BREAK
