Inuit individuals, families and communities. CSAA administers Health Canada Health Support Worker and Cultural Support Person services for Independent Process Hearings and Truth and Reconciliation Commission events in Ontario.
much as I enjoy my work and seeing how CSAA has helped former students of the residential schools as well as their families, I am looking forward to a new chapter in my life which includes building a healing and wellness lodge to instill pride and self confidence in the aboriginal community by helping them to reconnect with their cultural heritage and live their lives to their full potential. The lodge will be a log structure in a serene natural setting that will allow participants to escape, even for a Men Converse On Feet short time the cares of everyday life and allow them to rebuild their lives with traditional and cultural based practices such as sweat lodges and message therapy and to emerge refreshed and rejuvenated in body and spirit. one to sit back and wait for her dream lodge to magically appear, Lavinna plans to be in the bush for Converse High Tops Womens Size 4

Not only can she count on the support of her partner, David Turton and her family, including an uncle who is a professional builder of log structures, she has acquired a solid basis of construction while helping to build eight log homes. It will be a very hands on project!

Lavinna Pemmican, a health support worker with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association, is an Oji Cree, born in Kasabonika Lake First Nation but adopted into the Chapleau Cree. She is the adopted daughter of Mike Cachagee, a survivor of the Shingwauk Residential School, and a man who was in Ottawa on June 11, 2008, when Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized in Parliament on behalf of Canada for one of the darkest chapters in its history.
Children were moved hundreds of miles away from their parents and homes and placed into crowded boarding schools with poor sanitation, inadequate nutrition and a low standard of medical care that resulted in numerous deaths. Racism, physical and sexual abuse and a constant assault on their culture and language were often rampant.
Shingwauk Residential School Centre that CSSA developed serves an important role at its many gatherings and conferences. Through the centre, the CSAA assists survivors who apply for the Common Experience Payment, CEP Reconsiderations, CEP Appeals to the Court, and IAP programs at no cost. the healing processes are underway there is much to be done when you consider that the Indian residential schools existed for about 150 years and that approximately 150,000 children were involved.
On Aug. 2, 1875 the New Shingwauk Hall, a residential school for First Nation, M and Inuit children opened in Sault Ste. Marie. It was one of many government funded, church run residential schools that aimed to eliminate parental involvement in the spiritual, cultural and intellectual development of aboriginal children.
Healing lodge to help participants reconnect
Lavinna knows firsthand how residential schools left the survivors with a legacy of unresolved trauma that has passed from generation to generation.
In his apology in Parliament in 2008, Prime Minister Stephen said, government now recognizes that the consequences of the Indian residential schools policy were profoundly negative and that this policy has had a lasting and damaging impact on aboriginal culture, heritage and language. Pemmican is working to help aboriginal and non aboriginal people come together with mutual respect to overcome the problems of the past and live full and satisfying lives in a stronger Canada. The sad legacy of Indian residential schools and the problems they created cannot be fixed overnight but workers such as Lavinna are helping to move the process forward. The contact telephone and fax numbers for CSAA are 705 942 9422 and 1 866 575 0006.
Lavinna is convinced that the healing lodge will help to keep her grounded and focused on what is important in life. Plans for down the road include entering politics and helping residential school survivors to acknowledge what happened to them so that they can mend relationships with their families and the rest of Canada.
